Abstract:
The nature and focus of environmental graphic design began to shift during the 1970s, evolving
from a field rooted in wayfinding systems and organizational methodologies to a discipline that
merged the professional capabilities of graphic design, architecture, and interior design to
establish spatial experience. As the field of environmental graphic design continues to evolve, so
does the extensity of the graphic solutions. This thesis explores the application of environmental
graphic designs, specifically evaluating sensorial-based graphics’ ability to transform preexisting
space into an interactive environment that reinforces and amplifies the intended
communication to its users. It further assesses the influence of materiality, lighting, scale, and
spatial relations on user-engagement as compared with two-dimensional graphic applique. These
additional layers of sensory engagement create a holistic and resonating design experience,
which activates user experience and ultimately enhances spatial narrative.
