Abstract:
"This thesis explores the effects of Olympic architecture on historic landscapes within urban environments. The Olympics are a time of national pride while providing opportunities to implement infrastructure improvement projects, build iconic structures, and gain a renewed sense of cultural identity. Evaluation of preservation philosophy and architectural theory aims to determine if building for iconic permanence or temporary function is more appropriate for landscape preservation efforts when creating venue spaces in existing urban fabric. Specific case studies of Atlanta and Los Angeles analyze the proper planning and reuse of Olympic structures after the Games are over. Further studies of Beijing, and London define the most recent Olympic design trends, as well as the upcoming Games in Rio de Janeiro."
