Abstract:
This thesis will explore how interior design can aid in the revitalization and redefinition of community
within rural America by transforming deactivated schools. This prototypical environment will focus on
Third Age populations and is to be implemented as a preventative solution allowing community identity
to be sustained upon school deactivation. Based on research and analysis the familiar learning
environment will be transformed using memory association and reconnection of people to place, in
order to facilitate healthy aging and social involvement.
