Abstract:
This thesis tackles the concept of intangible cultural heritage in America and uses baseball as a case study to describe the necessary steps in safeguarding endangered heritage. Since the
United States has not ratified the 2003 Intangible Cultural Heritage Convention, there is currently no protection in place for intangible cultural heritage and this thesis explains the need for such actions.
Abstract:
As another aspect of intangible cultural heritage, stadiums are defined as cultural spaces for the game of baseball, including a short history on the four phases of baseball structures and their current state. With the recognition of baseball and their stadiums, this thesis looks at the positive changes within the sport and the elements that are in desperate need of safeguarding.
Abstract:
This thesis call for the implementation and expansion of current programs run by Major League Baseball, the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum as part of the safeguarding plan along with newer, heritage-focused programs to be headed by experienced organizations. The National Park Service, the American Folklife Center, and the Smithsonian Institution would bring in their expertise in documenting, archiving, and preserving both the written and built history of baseball.
