Abstract:
China’s fashion market tripled over the past decade, reaching around 63 billion dollars at the end of 2010. It has been predicted that China’s fashion market will be the world’s second largest fashion market by 2020 with its growing demands to reach approximately 205 billion dollars (Lui et al., 2011). In order to capture these opportunities, many global fast fashion retailers such as Zara, H&M, and Uniqlo are aggressively executing their expansion in China. As a result, the fashion retail landscape will become more competitive and intense for the local Chinese fashion brands.
The fast fashion phenomenon has been mostly studied by its business model related to supply chain management. However, the fast fashion retail physical environment has been ignored, even though it is considered a significant environment between a brand and its consumers. The existing fast fashion store environment is not currently designed to translate the efficiencies and support the fast fashion system (Barnes & Lea-Greenwood, 2010). This thesis aims to analyze the fast fashion phenomenon in order to better understand new challenges within a modern retail format. This research supports a new design model to serve local fast fashion brands in China, helping fast fashion retailers achieve rapid turnover and enhance shoppers’ experience within an efficient store environment.
