Abstract:
This thesis addresses the perpetual problem that affects the human awareness of the fragile state of the
ocean. This is the “out of sight, out of mind” mentality. This study uncovers specific barriers that cause
this mentality to occur. The problem is addressed in a new way by studying the storytelling aspects of the
SCUBA diving community. An in-depth investigation shows how the SCUBA diving community is a
community of practice. Findings show how dive education concepts prove to be a powerful asset in
getting important messages across in a variety of ways. The study draws from analysis of the power of
storytelling and story structure as a means to enhance the meaning and recollection of messages.
