Abstract:
Currently, films are categorized within a haphazard and shifting genre system that has more in common with marketing material rather than cinematic taxonomy. Other than the accepted (yet inaccurate) narrative-based genre titles, the visual effects artist has no concise terms through which to describe the aesthetics of a given film. Through the intense research and dissection of many notable films, particularly those with an emphasis on visual effects, objective genre system based solely on aesthetics and visual flair has been developed. The exploration and research required to create the aesthetic genre system has led to many additional discoveries regarding visual art and film criticism as well as the breakdown of many dogmatic views that pervade modern misconceptions regarding cinema in general. Through research and dissection of notable films displaying distinctive visual characteristics, an objective and taxonomic genre system based solely on aesthetics and visual styles would provide the visual effects artist with concise terms through which to describe the aesthetic goals of a given visual film project.
