Abstract:
What are the responsibilities of architect during natural disasters? United States sustains about ten major
disasters every year. Yet in the aftermath, most architects are absent from the effort to protect the victims.
After recent events, such as Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Haiti, urgent questions have been raised
about the role and responsibility of architect in post-disasters solutions. The lack of suitable planning for
post-disasters has become to be a striking problem in the design field. Many major agencies do not use the
knowledge and profession of architecture for emergency housing. Yet they send people that are not familiar
with the needs which effectively condemn the victims to years of inadequate housing.

The relationship between architecture and building technologies has played a vital role in the development of
both disciplines throughout history. Computational advances have become a huge influence in the design
process. This project specifically focuses on the use of digital fabrication as an influence in the design process.
Considering the use of digital fabrication methods, I intend to look into the relationship between design and
production to make a pre-fabricated system that a user can carry for immediate assembly as a post-hurricane
disaster shelter module.
