Abstract:
Through extensive research and analysis, this thesis will investigate the current methods of treatment used in existing psychiatric facilities. This will facilitate a better
understanding of organizational structure and performance as it responds to differences in environmental conditions such as client characteristics, community needs,
and healthcare resources. The goal is to develop a sustainable building prototype that will be integrated into the campus of a private institution, and serve as a Behavioral
Health Pavilion for the community. The assimilation of mental health and primary care will encourage a new model for healthcare reform entitled “collaborative
care management” that focuses on hospitals providing a more holistic approach to patient care. Furthermore, the thesis will explore the building typology of the existing
hospital in order to develop a facility that influences behavior change with respect to community values and traditions. The building will focus on key aspects of life
safety, building codes, and building performance to ensure a comprehensive understanding of universal healthcare design and functionality. It will also exhibit a strong
investigation of materials, day lighting, indoor/outdoor spaces, color, and nature to create a healing environment that is conducive to patient wellness and recovery.
