Abstract:
Individuals struggle with the weight of daily challenges, with the way in which to
balance demands, and deal with preconceived notions of the right way, the wrong
way to approach situations and relationships. We all have coping mechanisms to
help us traverse the daily grind and juggle long-term commitments. A structured
schedule provides a framework to support the weight of daily responsibilities.
Through exposure to certain aspects of the processes and work of artists Ernesto
Neto, Eva Hesse, and Louise Bourgeois, I began to build a foundation from which to
frame the discussion of my own process and resulting body of work. The purpose of
this thesis is to investigate structure, through large gauge crochet, and to examine
the visual effect of weight and its absence on the forms. The installation of the visual
work synthesizes the relationship between the physical and the mental aspects of
these demands. The paper highlights an approach to art making, and the importance
of material choice for both maker and audience.
