Abstract:
"This thesis investigates the potential impact of applying biophilic and restorative design attributes to an in-patient alcohol and drug rehabilitation center. The objective is to explore how this approach impacts the interior environment, promotes healing, improves the individual experience, and potentially lowers the percentage of relapse. The end goal is to create a design that, when paired with a holistic healing program, promotes well-being and decreases the chronic relapse cycle. For the design solution, an urban drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility setting is proposed that incorporates the attributes of biophilia and attention restoration theory into an environment without direct natural surroundings. With a more accessible, in-town location, the center provides greater access to the general community. However, this also creates the challenge of incorporating natural elements within a city environment."
