Abstract:
Without farming humankind would not have made it as far today as we have.
Technology today can be quite astonishing and should be used to benefit a
better way of living and also supporting the immediate community it is situated
in. One of the most basic elements for human survival is the need to eat. When
the body is denied food it will eventually shut down resulting in death. In a world
that constantly pushes forward including a population that continues growing
humans are living within a society that is integrated with technology. With food
being readily available all around us many don’t think about where our food
comes from, and more importantly that space is nearly used up with current
farming methods. This thesis explores the idea of merging architecture with
farming by means of current technology to create a new urban farm relieving
strain on the ecosystem by creating a source of food in dense urban areas.
Proposed is the use of abandoned land just outside New York City to create a
public space that is home to a sustainable vertical farm which will create food for
the local community.
