Abstract:
This thesis focused on the effect of cognitive visualization on the interpretation of information in order to find ways that sequential art can be a more effective communicator. Using Kelvin Seifert’s theory of cognition, aspects of sequential art that serve to aid development of long term memory schema were examined, such as emphasizing important points, giving the reader control over the pace of reading the material, and by addressing the information needs of different
audiences. A variety of examples of sequential art were considered from different time periods and genres, such as instruction manuals, safety information, and advertising. Reasons why sequential art was successful in some examples and not others were examined, as well as ways that sequential art can be used more successfully in the future.
