Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how further training and
development in the performing arts and methods can benefit character animators
in their quest to create believable performances. The central argument is
explored through two components; written and visual. The first seeks to
investigate performing art methodologies and the incorporation of those
principles to character animation. Selected case studies will illustrate the positive
and negatives of how these concepts operate. The visual component of this
inquiry is demonstrated through the production of the short film Umbrella Girl.
The principles and methodologies researched will be practiced and applied
through the development of the animated character performance. This film will
not only demonstrate how performing art techniques relate to an animator and
the ease of applying these principles. It will also exemplify the significance of
incorporating a performance component into the study of animation.
