Revered English architect David Chipperfield’s singular design approach celebrates England’s unique, albeit reluctant, relationship with flatware. Initially unwelcome at the English table, the fork was spurned by Queen Elizabeth I, who preferred to eat with her fingers, believing “spearing [to be] an uncouth action.” It was not until 30 years after she died, in 1633, that Charles I proclaimed the fork to be “decent,” presenting each of his children a utensil set consisting of a knife, spoon, and fork. Paying homage to the English tradition through daring innovation, Chipperfield’s design reveals a startling form, despite its apparent simplicity. Made of 18/10 mirror-polish stainless steel, the set features a tablespoon, table fork, table knife, dessert fork, teaspoon, and protective plastic. The flatware’s reductive design recalls traditional English cutlery, notably the three-pronged fork and rounded soup spoon.
