As a young girl, Brother Vellies’ founder Aurora James embraced an old Nigerian proverb imparted by her mother: “Until the lion has a historian, the hunter will always be the hero.” Aurora’s mother regularly took her to museums but quickly reminded her that the world’s marginalized people had no one to tell their story — they were not in books or museum archives. James’ childhood experiences led her to journey across Africa, where she witnessed local artisans carving beads out of cow bones, a sophisticated artistry comparable to that of any fashion house in Paris or Milan. The only difference, she thought, was that the artists were people of color and from countries not associated with luxury.
With Brother Vellies, James aimed to change that narrative. Guided by the company mission to celebrate traditional African craftsmanship while incorporating modern design elements, James designed the nude pump in stone faux snake. Made from suede with a four-inch heel, the pump embodies luxury through its thoughtful design, craftsmanship, and the brand’s commitment to sustainability and ethical production.
