Crafted from a tightly woven cotton twill pretreated before weaving, the lightweight fabric revolutionized the industry, supplanting heavy and uncomfortable rubberized cotton clothing for wicking rain. Burberry soon lent its designs to the British military, and their prevalence in the trenches of the First World War forever changed the garment’s name.
