Abstract:
This thesis discusses the intersection of music and design and seeks to discover a way of practically representing music behavior through visual means. Existing music visualization systems are discussed before the definition of a new system is explored. Within this new system, parallels are drawn between the basic building blocks of music - pitch, duration, dynamic, and timbre - and their visual design equivalents. Translating these musical building blocks into visual language and synthesizing them into a new system yields a consistent, objective and formal means of music analysis and appreciation through visual means.
