Abstract:
In this thesis, I set out to expound the evolution of my recent series, More Lightning in the Hand. The series grew out of research into Native Americans’ struggle in the development of The United States and their current state after generations of marginalization, assimilation and oppression. Key themes investigated in More Lightning in the Hand are Native American histories and cultural aspects, Abstract Expressionist thought, and the intertwining of the two to inform processes and conceptual aims. I discuss my work along with artists I find commonality with, such as Cy Twombly and Iva Gueorguieva. At the crux of my essay is an examination of ideas on history, civilization, and modernization in regards to the processes and concepts in which my works function. Finally, an in-depth analysis of the individual paintings from the More Lightning in the Hand series illuminates the varied inspirations and processes that converge onto themes ranging from modern guilt, decay, and detachment to remembrance, retribution and reconnection.
