Abstract:
|
This thesis argues that while on the surface the current state of the furniture industry in the United States looks healthy, by not cultivating a deep relationship with the user, it runs the risk of losing its creative value to society. The industrial revolution paved the way for mass production; the “baby boom” following WWII required innovation to keep up with demand; however innovation soon became secondary and the emphasis more and more has been on mass production. As a result, the furniture manufactured today has largely become a product and has lost the ability to connect to the user. This thesis advocates the need for creating a deeper connection between the object and the user. The research offers one of many possible solutions: integrating meaning in the design. The thesis does not contain a formula for successful integration of meaning; instead it offers one possible of many ways: interpreting a universal myth as an expression of the common unconsciousness and using its elements in design.
