Abstract:
"This thesis examines history comics, with a specific focus on the relationship between genre, ethics, and reader expectation. It is argued that because of challenges specific to history comics, the genres of nonfiction and fiction are unable to successfully uphold a contract with the reader. Therefore, it is proposed that history comics should utilize the genre of creative nonfiction, which preserves the storytelling aspect of fiction as well as the expectation of factual accuracy of nonfiction. The use of creative nonfiction is recommended only under the condition that the history comics creator documents the line between fact and fiction. This should be done in a way that is easily accessible to the reader, preferably with a combination of an author’s note and endnotes."
