Abstract:
"This thesis investigates the juxtaposition of art and science in Mayan culture within the context of contemporary motion design techniques. It also examines three aspects of Mayan culture: the culture itself, its global perspective, and the annual event that celebrates Kukulcan’s descent to Earth. In addition, this paper will analyze Mayan cultural symbols and their relationship to kaleidoscopic patterns. The use of perfect geometrical shapes and kaleidoscopic patterns transformed Mayan culture into a magical phenomenon that transported the mind into a new psychedelic space. Directors who work in the motion media industry have used kaleidoscopic patterns to reinforce the existence of a psychedelic dimension; therefore, this thesis will analyze motion media projects that have these characteristics. To establish a broad typology of non-traditional kaleidoscopes, I will exemplify kaleidoscopic patterns in motion media projects and evaluate their use in a music video, a movie, a television commercial, an installation, and a promo, respectively. Moreover, this thesis will argue in favor of the use of kaleidoscopic patterns in motion media projects as a strategy to represent oneiric activity and abstraction." --Abstract
