Abstract:
"Surrealist cinema is an extension of surrealism, a form of cinematic art that emphasizes the fantastic, the illogical, and the surreal. Surrealist cinema is an extended form of surrealism. However, scholars and critics have put forth a different viewpoint regarding the definition and scope of surrealistic cinema. They argue that surrealism is not an independent film genre but a style or technique of expression, as it is not limited to film but also involves other fields such as literature, painting, and music. Therefore, surrealism can appear in various types of films, usually as a part of the film, such as a surreal scene or sequence. These sequences often use elements that differ from reality, such as fantasy settings, non-linear narratives, exaggerated visual effects, and unconventional character behavior, to create a dream-like atmosphere and emotions that make the audience feel a sense of existence and sensation beyond reality. Thus, surrealism in cinema serves as a means of expressing ideas and emotions for filmmakers, i.e., surrealism in film. Based on this perspective, this thesis will explore and discuss what values surrealism contained in narrative cinema can provide and how editing is used to enhance these values and better integrate them with realistic sequences." --Abstract Keywords: surrealism, surrealist cinema, narrative films, surrealistic sequences, editing
