Abstract:

“In an increasingly diverse society, designers will face the different needs and design challenges of varied audience members, making inclusivity essential to the design experience. Sensory design allows designers to break away from the limitations of visual-centric design and bring multiple senses to the process of information delivery. It allows design experiences to be composed of more resonant, multi-layered impressions. The inclusion of sensory design expands the way audiences engage with the design experience, bridges the information gap of single-sensory messaging, and conforms to the principle of inclusivity. A growing number of design cases demonstrate that design that incorporates multi-sensory experiences can stimulate audience excitement and interaction. This effectively breaks down cultural, psychological, and gender differences, and allows diverse audiences to have access to the experience. This thesis concludes with multiple case studies that discuss and analyze the necessity of incorporating multi-sensory design in design experiences. The goal of this thesis is to show how multi-sensory design contributes to inclusivity for all audiences, and the visual components will focus on inclusivity examples in a broader context.” –Abstract
