Abstract:
“The Dong, also known as the Kam, is one of China’s fifty-five officially recognized ‘minority groups’ living in the southwest part of China with a special tradition and culture (Ingram, 2012). Dong dress culture is slowly disappearing in the daily life, along with their traditional clothing, jewelry, and cultural artifacts, which are only represented in museums (He, 2010). For a long time, many designers believe the ethnic dress is fixed and western fashion is modish, which leads to the distortion of ethnic minority cultures, leading to a misunderstanding or abandoning of the cultures (Jansen, 2015). In fact, ethnic dress is constantly changing, being reshaped by different dress styles, national concepts, and the global fashion system (Hansen, 2015). M. Angela Jansen (2015), a Moroccan ethnic fashion scholar, states that the interaction between ethnic and foreign fashions is not necessarily conflicting but can be a powerful tool for redefining the concepts of traditional, modern, local, and global. More and more fashion designers focus on Chinese ethnic culture and combine ethnic elements with different fashion styles. Compared with well-known ethnic groups such as Uygur and Tibetan, Dong culture rarely appears in ethnic fashion. Therefore, this thesis project concentrates to the dress culture of the Dong and use fashion as a medium to convey it and awaken more people's attention to this group. The study not only focuses on dress elements and the application of Dong dress in the global fashion market, but also considers the social meaning behind it and avoids exoticism. This thesis paper aims to consider the influence of ethnic dress in the fashion industry, and in particular the influence of the Dong ethnic group, and to explore new directions and influences taken from their indigenous dress and applied to contemporary work.” -- Abstract Keywords: ethnic dress, culture, Dong, global fashion, fusion, contemporary.
