Abstract:
"Death is a part of life. Often times, we find ourselves fully appreciating something only once it has been lost. The behaviors and actions following the loss of a loved one can vary drastically depending on the situation. In the photographic body of work Someone You Know? I investigate the untimely death of my mother and the emotional and mental effects of her passing. By utilizing family photographs in combination with writing and other multi-media components, this body of work translates the complexities of death and the grieving process and reveals the shortcomings of typical family photographs. With a look into the history of death’s relationship to photography as well as issues of identity, memory, and combinations of text and photographic image, I investigate the ways that the family photographic album falls short of its intended function."
