Abstract:
The Modern Story of Drayton Tower explores the 62-year-old International Style modern building in the heart of historic Savannah, Georgia. The building is visually and, by extension, photographically appealing both because of its original design and the transitional state in which the building currently finds itself. The city of Savannah has enjoyed a long legacy of preservation, but typically these efforts have focused on colonial and Victorian buildings. A city that prides itself on preservation should hold true to honoring and protecting all buildings, including modernist ones.
Abstract:
Through the photographic narrative, The Modern Story of Drayton Tower, I have created photographs that are both artistic expressions and documents in my desire to capture the beauty and transition of this building and heighten awareness of its importance. Straddling two traditions within architectural photography, these images combine a promotion of modernist architecture, while adding another voice in the effort to save this historic building for the future. I ultimately intend to unify the celebration of the modern aesthetic and the case for preservation of Drayton Tower.
