"Western film as a unique label for American film has been developed for more than 100 years, however, it has changed a lot between the Classic and Revisionist Eras. What causes the lighting techniques to change between the classic and revisionist Western films? This thesis focuses on the Searchers and True Grit as the representatives of the classic Western and Revisionist Western respective. By analyzing those films, looking at behind-the-scenes photos and interviews, I find the lighting quality is a huge difference. The films were made under different historical
backgrounds using distinctive technology of equipment technologies by the different context of filmmakers' aesthetic. The aesthetic of filmmakers and new technologies invention evolves the lighting techniques. The soft light has been used again in the films." -- Abstract
