Abstract:
"This thesis will explore the themes and consistencies through various monster-of-the-week driven shows in various television programming that aired in the recent past. It also analyzes motivations for characters in this genre. This type of television show is typically character driven and each monster is usually a reflection of the protagonist and as they explore how they can deal with a seemly impossible situation. This type of show works inside the fantasy setting, but can be equally well situated in a more realistic setting. My script 'Blind Faith' is an hour long dramedy pilot about a confidence man who performs fake exorcisms and an ostracized high schooler who struggles with her lot in life. This first episode follows the story of them teaming up and is the premise pilot which will lead to a monster-of-the-week type show. By comparing 'Blind Faith' to five television shows in similar genre spaces, this thesis will prove that the sub-genre of monster-of-the-week type shows has more to offer than weekly hollow scares."
