Abstract:
|
"This thesis discusses the aspects of graphic memoir that make it the ideal vehicle for marginalized creators to tell their stories. Graphic memoir provides opportunities not currently available to such creators in the realms of other visual media, its creative control allows creators to tell their stories accurately and with agency. The multimodality of the comics medium requires a visual literacy that allows for a more complex reading and analysis. These elements come together to encourage a more active empathy, which highlights other perspectives while also reminding the reader of their own role in power structures that create marginalization."
