Abstract:
|
"In the seventeenth century, Tenebrism was an important school of art and had a significant influence on Baroque art. It enhanced the dramatic atmosphere of oil paintings in that period with a strong contrast between light and dark. At the same time, the contrast between light and dark describes the opposition between 'Yang' and 'Yin' in Taoist thought. Taoism had a far-reaching impact on the horror films in Hong Kong in the 1980s. This thesis paper will study the theory of Tenebrism and its influence in Hong Kong horror movies and will examine the possibility of applying the light setup of Tenebrism to 3D animation."

Includes "Cha Siu Bun," a short animation showing light changes as the camera moves through three scenes -- street, restaurant, kitchen -- based on an actual 1985 crime in which a suspect murdered and dissected nine members of a family and, as the bodies were never found, was rumored to have cooked and sold char siew buns from the corpse
