Abstract:
"Culturally-themed illustrations for food packaging can help consumers develop a better understanding of diverse values to bridge the existing social divide. Illustrations on a product’s exterior packaging can provide rich information about the product’s heritage, which can increase cross-cultural understanding and improve consumer/brand interaction. Through an analysis of current illustration packaging trends, the following research identifies a powerful opportunity for authentic and educational food package design to bridge cultural differences and increase human empathy through improved inter-ethnic understanding. The research examines how brands use package design principles to distinguish individual products and to compete in the global marketplace. It will investigate how food package design can establish an emotional connection between the consumer and the product’s representative culture, impacting human psychology. A comparison and analysis of how various illustration styles in contrast to the use of photography can build a brand’s personality will reveal how design can foster cultural awareness in the food packaging market. The visual component comprises a combination of illustration, photography and info-graphics for selected cultures, reflecting socially significant information that tells a rich and complex story of a place."
