Abstract:
"This thesis explores genre of magical realism, and its uses for visual storytelling, with an emphasis on live action and animated media. By utilizing magical realism and its basis of real world settings, a story creator is able to incorporate elements of the fantastic by drawing from myth, folklore, fairytales and wordplay. With this foundation, an author is enabled to tell big stories, side-step plot holes, and ease viewers into suspension of disbelief, even with condensed formats, like the animated short. This thesis looks at films and other research material to elaborate on why magical realism is such a powerful tool for the visual storyteller and how by utilizing its limitations as well as its strengths, one is able to tell a more immersive, adventurous, and playful film."
