Abstract:

"This thesis focuses on analyzing the relationship between word and image in picture books.
As an art form which includes both picture and text, a picture book has two sets of
communication systems: visual and verbal. This collaboration requires that picture bookmakers
have a high level of literary and artistic skills. Traditionally, the picture book was regarded as an
early education tool for children. However, it has developed into a unique art form that also can
be enjoyed by all walks of life now. Through this thesis I explore a variety of types of
interactions between word and image in picture books, study how these relationships influence
the imaginations and reading experiences for readers, discuss why a satisfying picture book
should have a good quality of visual and verbal interplay. I will then examine the dynamic
word-image relationship in my own picture book project. My goal is to seek more effective
possibilities in creating children’s picture books and get the best resolution to achieve
successful storytelling in the picture book."
