Abstract:
"This thesis examines the physical phenomenon of infrasound – acoustic energy that is too low in pitch to be heard by human ears. The research referenced describes the psychological effects of infrasound along with examples of naturally and artificially occurring instances of low frequency sound. Infrasound, if used tactfully, can be deliberately incorporated into film soundtracks in order to expand movies’ capacity to influence audiences. Incorporating an infrasonic speaker into a surround sound system is a process which enables sound editors and sound mixers to physically and emotionally move viewers beyond contemporary film audio conventions."
