Abstract:
"Architecture, like most things in this world, is primarily perceived through the sense of sight. Sound, however, is an integral participant in how we perceive space. Unfortunately, as an evaluation tool it is a discounted or misinterpreted sense. This thesis will discuss the applications of sound and how sound waves can alter our perceptions of space by influencing design in a positive way. We are inundated by sound every minute of every day. Even in the quietest of rooms we tune in to ticking clocks, the beating of our hearts, or the subtle expulsion of air as we breathe. Sound can be welcomed or even expected when involved with certain spaces, or alternatively not expected at all. It is possible for sounds to alter our perceptions through loudness, frequency (pitch, clusters, harmonies), duration (intermittent vs constant), and probability (expectation of sound or lack of sound). Currently, architectural design is based on visual and tactile senses while sound is an afterthought; placing treatments on the walls, ceilings, and floors to alter the sound to meet our visual needs. Why not allow acoustics to shape, or at the very least inform, spaces?"
