Abstract:
|
Make, Believe is an interactive exploration of perception using various art media and techniques. The work
includes a series of sculptures and photographs. The sculptures are photographed, making them appear flat and
revealing an anamorphic shape. The photograph and sculpture are presented side by side and the viewer is asked to
use his or her phone to take a picture of the photograph, revealing another anamorphic shape. This revelation, due to
perceptual shift, is a demonstration of the brains ability of creating varied interpretations of the same thing while
unveiling and masking various elements trough out the process. With all three elements, the sculptural truth, the
photographic truth, and the perceptual truth being presented to the viewer, the viewer has a better understanding of
the complete truth. If one element is missing, the truth is unknown.
With an abundance of imagery being circulated in today’s society, it is virtually impossible to discover
where these images originated from or if they are even true. Because of this people are beginning to experience
their world through imagery and are taking those experiences as truth. It is shown in Make, Believe that if one
element of a total experience is missing then that experience can be misinterpreted and lead to a false sense of
reality.
