Abstract:
In the 1980’s, the Policy of Economic Reform & Opening Doors led the way for China to be a modern country. But, this modernization process has brought many challenges to many Chinese cities. Instead of following traditional forms of urbanism, modernization tore down most buildings, and abandoned the Chinese culture. The foundation established for cities and the orginal reason that people lived in them was lost. Without culture, the cities lose their identities. Every street in every city looks the same in an effort to appear more “global.” Ningbo is one of those cities. Retaining the traditional building and preserving culture for the next generation is the primary priority for the Ningbonese. This thesis addresses this goal by offering a design for a Ningbo Cultural Center that will help to educate and inform the next generation about modern national architecture in China.
