Abstract:
For this thesis, I chose to illustrate a 32 page children’s book based on the musical Persian tale “Khoroos Zari Pirhan Pari” which roughly translates to “The Hen with the Golden Feathers.” This story captivates me in many ways. The featured characters are 3 friends: a hen (Khoroos), a cat (Gorbeh), and a crow (Callogh) who run into trouble with a crafty fox (Roobah). A major target market of mine is children’s illustration, which made this an ideal venture to aid in my career goals. A sub goal of this book was to incorporate some bilingual elements to spark the young reader’s interest in learning another language, in this case Farsi. Various words throughout the book are translated from English to Farsi as a way for readers to learn their first Farsi words. I also felt creating a children’s book based on a tale from Iran is a way to sever some misconceptions about Iranian culture and how people might think American and Iranian cultures differ. This story is extremely reminiscent of many classic Western tales, which might come as a surprise to many American/Western readers and hopefully act as a small bridge between cultures.
