Abstract:

This investigation strives to determine the
reason why historic buildings cause us to
feel nostalgic, it is not because of their age
or status as modern anomalies, but rather
that they possess inherent qualities of
humanism.
The buildings of the past were designed and
constructed in a manner that facilitated the
careful blending of functional requirements,
regional guidance, and technical availability.
These practical elements were considered
equally as important as the fundamental human qualities of scale, proportion, and
balance.
By using design as a tool for inquiry and
analysis, those lessons learned from the
form, materials, details, and structure can
inform our current practice.
Through the application of these
phenomenological design principles in
contemporary context, we will once again
value our buildings and choose to maintain
them, not because they are old, but because
they are places where we want to live.
