Abstract:

This thesis is written to accompany and provide context to my thesis exhibition, Essence.
Presence. Absence. Exploration of personal and art historical contexts and theoretical influences
informs and creates a foundation for my work and processes. My thesis concentrates on the
physical essence of materials and they manifest the presence and/or absence of the artist’s hand
and spiritual self. My presence is recorded through the use of mixed medium drawings, painting,
photographic techniques and the incorporation of textiles. My work becomes both a narrative and
documentation of my process.
