Abstract:
|
This thesis examines the existence of kinetic typography within fictional film narratives–
that is, type that exists outside of films’ title sequences–in an effort to identify historical trends
and stylistic conventions of this practice, primarily as a narrative device and, subordinately, as a
visual technique. This examination then extends to analysis of a selected feature film example,
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, in an effort to apply relatively new theoretical considerations to an
increasingly utilized cinematic device. Additionally, the thesis visual project, three original
vignettes, demonstrates that animated typography composited within fictional film narratives can
present imaginative and subjective responses to the characters or events to which they are
applied.
