Abstract:
|
Mirroring other demonstrations of collective youth rebellion, such as the Punk Movement
of the 1970s, Hip-Hop is the manifestation of the reaction to urban hardship. Through its visual
language Hip-Hop has been able to maintain relevance cross-generationally and has had the
ability to reach and influence a global demographic. This lasting effect of Hip-Hop is due to the
immersive experience it creates in part, through the use of art and design elements as a means of
communication. This thesis will explore the parallels between Hip-Hop and Graphic Design, and
how Hip-Hop has been able to maintain relevance globally, by dissecting the universal messages
of the culture and how it is communicated to its audience through a multi-media platform. It will
also show how the visual culture of Hip-Hop has expanded the culture’s opportunities to become
and maintain a major place in History.
