Abstract:
A
successful
film
is
pure
manipulation.
Editors
are
the
orchestrators
of
that
manipulation,
executing
their
skill
in
nuance
and
technical
assemblage.
One
of
an
editor’s
primary
concerns
is
forming
the
emotional
arch
of
a
film.
This
thesis
paper
will
discuss
methods
through
which
those
editorial
skills
can
be
put
to
work
in
the
conveyance
of
the
particular
emotion
of
love.
Films
The
New
World,
The
Notebook
and
Wall-E,
diverse
as
they
may
be,
demonstrate
similarities
in
the
portrayal
of
this
emotion.
The
first
trend
is
the
voyeuristic
motif
of
watching,
during
which
the
watcher
is
allowed
to
become
privy
to
something
otherwise
kept
private.
Specific
ways
characters
interact
while
falling
in
love
is
also
inspected,
primarily
through
analysis
of
close
ups
of
hands;
touch
and
connection
being
a
driving
force
when
assembling
a
love
story.
Finally,
acting
will
be
examined
within
facial
close
ups.
What
will
here
be
termed
“love
faces”
can
be
seen
repeatedly
in
these
love
stories,
packing
much
of
the
emotional
punch.
In
all
these
trends,
close
ups
play
a
peculiar
and
significant
role
in
focusing
the
audience’s
attention
to
the
importance
of
what
has
been
selected
to
be
shown,
as
well
as
revealing
details,
particularly
in
the
“love
faces.”
Each
of
these
elements,
focused
through
the
lens
of
an
editorial
vantage,
stand
out
as
exemplary
examples
of
skillful,
emotional
editing,
all
the
while
blending,
as
they
should,
into
the
heart
and
rhythm
of
the
story.
