Nude Pump Lavender Suede
Brand:
Brother Vellies
Description:
The history of the pump is as varied as the shape and height of its heels. Some claim heels were used as early as 3500 B.C. in Ancient Egypt by butchers to walk over bloody floors. Others argue that heels were first invented for wealthy men of 10th-century Persia, to satisfy their desires of being taller. Disputes abound as to when and how the heel first arrived in Europe, with some claiming Persian royalty first brought the trend to the French Courts in the 17th century, while others assert they arrived during Renaissance Italy when Catherine de Medici wore a high-heeled shoe to marry the Duke of Orléans. Whatever the truth may be, the pump has long reigned as a symbol of nobility and social stratum, a token of luxury and the ruling class. It’s from this tradition that Brother Vellies’ founder Aurora James has reclaimed the shoe and reinterpreted it as an accessory for everyone, particularly persons of color. Part of a broader movement to highlight and preserve African artistry within the global fashion industry, the brand’s dedication to traditional techniques not only supports artisans but also brings cultural narratives into contemporary fashion dialogues. Made from premium suede with hand-carved, wooden four-inch heels, the nude pump in lavender builds on both the storied history of the shoe and the modern relevance and contemporary design of the pump in the 21st century.
