Disputes abound as to when and how the heel first arrived in Europe, with some claiming Persian royalty first brought the trend to the French Courts in the 17th century, while others assert they arrived during Renaissance Italy when Catherine de Medici wore a high-heeled shoe to marry the Duke of Orléans. Whatever the truth may be, the pump has long reigned as a symbol of nobility and social stratum, a token of luxury and the ruling class.
